Salty Speaker – Doug Dixon

  • 02/17/2023
  • 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
  • Seabold Hall, Bainbridge Island

WHO:

This month's speaker is Doug Dixon, who recently retired from his decades long role as the General Manager of Pacific Fishermen Shipyard which was founded in Ballard in 1946 by 400 Norwegian Fishermen as a co-op style shipyard. This year they are celebrating 150 years of Norwegian Heritage Shipbuilding and he'll join us to share his new book, and tales of his adventures (and mis-adventures) running the shipyard and holding the line against the gentrification of the Ballard waterfront with some of the saltiest characters on the West Coast. Doug began his maritime career as a naval architect in 1974 in California at Global Marine, designing drilling ships, then came north to Seattle's pioneering MARCO Shipyard in 1977 to design and build crab boats. There he worked with Norwegian-American fishermen, including highliners and their vessels like the F/V NORTHWESTERN of Deadliest Catch fame, designing and selling the vessels and specialized machinery MARCO invented. After his departure from MARCO in 1991, Dixon worked for Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Lunde Electric and Guido Perla Naval Architects on multiple projects up and down the coast from California to Alaska and beyond. Since 2001, he has served as General Manager of Pacific Fishermen Shipyard and Electric, concurrently with independent consulting through Dixon Marine SurveysDoug is a classic Salty Speaker and one who should not be missed!
